Cornea Surgery

Corneal conditions can greatly affect your vision, our ophthalmologists are trained to diagnose and treat these conditions, both medically and surgically. Certain corneal conditions require surgical treatment, some of which can be done by our ophthalmologists on an outpatient basis at our surgery center. These procedures can help improve vision that has been impaired by corneal changes or damage.

Cornea Surgery FAQ

The cornea is the clear part on the front of the eye that covers the iris, pupil and anterior chamber of your eye. As light enters the eye, the cornea is responsible for focusing that light. It is often called “the window” of the eye. Certain corneal conditions require surgical intervention, some of which can be done by our ophthalmologists on an outpatient basis at our surgery center. These procedures can help preserve and in some cases improve vision that has been impaired by corneal changes or damage.

Superficial keratectomy – gentle removal of diseased skin from the cornea so that new healthy skin (epithelium) can grow in its place. It is indicated for improvement of blurry vision and/or pain in patients with corneal conditions such as Salzmann nodular degeneration, anterior basement membrane dystrophy (ABMD), recurrent corneal erosion, band keratopathy and other conditions of the cornea.

Pterygiectomy -removal of the pterygium followed by the placement of a small graft of healthy eye skin (conjunctiva) onto that area from another part of the eye, which helps things heal well and lowers the chance that the pterygium will grow back.
